MusicVault by XR Africa
Free for CCA studios & composers

Get paid royalties due to you.

When an agency or advertiser commissions music for a commercial, the composer is paid for creating that music. However, unless the music is specifically licensed on terms that exclude further performance royalties, the composer may also be entitled to royalties when the commercial is broadcast.

Importantly, these royalties come at no additional cost to the agency or advertiser. They are paid from licence fees already collected from broadcasters by Performing Rights Organisations (PROs), such as SAMRO.

Free No cost to the studio, composer, agency or advertiser for commercials delivered through XR / Adstream.

Private We never store your music. We take a fingerprint, then the uploaded audio is deleted.

Your music stays yours

We never store your music.

MusicVault keeps a fingerprint, not your audio. The moment a track has been fingerprinted, the file you uploaded is permanently deleted from our servers.

1

Fingerprint only

We take a digital fingerprint of each track — a compact code that recognises the music in a broadcast. It can't be played back or turned back into audio.

2

Audio deleted

As soon as the fingerprint is made, the uploaded file is permanently deleted. We don't keep a copy, an archive or a backup of your audio.

3

No access, no reuse

There is no playback, download or library of your music on MusicVault. Nobody — including us — can access or reuse it through our service.

Two ways to be identified

Two ways to ensure your music is identified and reported.

XR Africa is offering CCA members two free services for all television commercials delivered through XR / Adstream.

Automatic
1 · Automatic music recognition

MusicVault

XR Africa has developed MusicVault, a free service that allows studios and composers to register their music in our reference database. The process is simple:

  1. Upload your music through the MusicVault portal.
  2. We fingerprint each track and permanently delete the original audio file. Only the digital fingerprint is retained, so the music itself cannot be accessed or reused through our service.
  3. Our music recognition technology scans television commercials against these fingerprints to identify where your music has been used.
  4. Cue sheets can be automatically generated, identifying the music used in each commercial and reducing the need for manual reporting.
  5. Broadcast monitoring data can establish how often each commercial aired to calculate the estimated royalties due.
By email
2 · Cue sheet reporting

XR Library

Alternatively, studios and composers can simply provide the music information for commercials they produce, including commissioned compositions, production library music and royalty-free music.

Even when royalty-free music is used, it should still be documented on the cue sheet to ensure accurate reporting and distinguish between music that attracts performance royalties and music that does not.

Every advertisement delivered through XR / Adstream is automatically archived in the advertiser's XR Library, providing a permanent record of the commercial and its associated metadata.

All you need to do is email the music details — the commercial's flight code, track title, composer, music library or publisher, and SAMRO work number (where available) — to our traffic team. Our team will capture this information against the commercial in the advertiser's XR Library, ensuring the music is correctly documented and available for cue sheet generation and reporting.

There is no charge to the studio, composer, agency or advertiser for either service, provided the commercial is delivered through XR / Adstream. This ensures that all music used in advertising is properly recorded, whether it is locally composed, sourced from a production music library or licensed as royalty-free.

Why this matters

Without accurate identification, composers miss out.

Without accurate music identification and reporting, composers risk missing out on royalties they have earned.

Whether your music is identified automatically through MusicVault or reported directly to our traffic team, the objective is the same: to establish a reliable record linking the composition to the commercial and its broadcast history.

By building a comprehensive reference library of locally composed music, alongside accurate music metadata captured at the point of delivery, we can significantly improve royalty reporting across South African advertising.

What we need from you

The more music in the library, the better it works for everyone.

We invite all CCA studios and composers to upload their music to MusicVault.

For new commercials, simply provide the music details to our traffic team when arranging delivery through XR / Adstream.

There is no cost to participate, and the more music we have in our reference database, the more effective the system becomes for everyone.

Ensure that composers receive the recognition and royalties they are entitled to.
